Unplugged Dance is an international dance platform that takes place every summer in Neochori Lefkada since 2022, hosting original dance workshops, artistic residencies and other events with a core interest in the art of Dance as a holistic experience.

Its purpose is to act as a pulsing core for the emergence of contemporary alternative education models related to movement, contributing to the familiarization of a wider audience with the present methods and techniques that approach dance as a practice of embodiment.

The program offers original methods developed in the contemporary era around the world, by dance artists and educators, and their main interest is dance as:

lived experience

holistic practice

field that manifests the body-mind integration

field of highlighting socio-political issues

and the intention is for participants to:

develop awareness in their movement

enjoy the dance experience

gain confidence through creative processes

sharpen their critical skills

feel comfortable with their body and movement

be inspired to apply what they learn in various aspects of everyday life

An important feature of the program, and one of the elements that we consider to make it innovative and unique, is the importance we give to the originality of the workshops. All the workshops that are offered are the result of the facilitators’ personal artistic and educational research, which makes them special and unique. The themes and axes with which they work, speak directly to contemporary artistic and educational needs, thus offering fertile ground for the participants to cultivate their own personal searches around the body and the art of Dance.

These are emerging methods of dance teaching that came as a continuation of the artists’ personal practice. These workshops are often actively in dialogue with and inspired by recognized Somatics techniques – such as e.g. Body-Mind Centering, Alexander technique, Klein technique, Feldenkrais method, etc. – but without sharing the exact same methods. They consciously highlight their references, thus creating a continuity and making visible the thread that connects them, both to each other and to History.

Our interest lies in approaching qualities such as the following, through different paths of dance.

A special feature of this program is the geographical location where it takes place, and its duration. The program is designed to take place in the green, mountainous settlement of Neochori on the island of Lefkada. More specifically, on the open air floor of Paleochori, a few minutes outside the settlement, in the forest. Participants during the program are not only sharing the process of the workshops, but also the time that follows or precedes them, as well as a common space for practice, rest and feeding. The time around the table as they share meals, or the rest time in between, where they can walk around the village, enjoy nature and chat, is fertile time for common fermentation, where they collectively deepen and digest information.

WHO IS IT FOR?

One of the core interests and goals of the project is to bring the contemporary artistic and educational practices of dance and their creators into direct contact with people from all over the world, regardless of previous dance experience, physical condition, age, gender, social class, or other identities. The specific dance and pedagogical methods offer a common place of practice for both experienced dancers and people with no previous experience who wish to explore through the art of Dance.

We believe in the extraordinary benefits that dance can offer to every person, developing them both physically as well as intellectually and socially, and we consider how this project can be a bridge between the professional field of Dance and the wider community of people who are interested to learn, explore and benefit through movement and Dance.

In these practices both professionals and participants without previous experience can organically coexist, deepen in their own quests, and approach the methods according to their present state of body and mind.

This is why the format of mixed groups of professionals and non-professionals is our conscious choice to encourage the act of dance as an experience open to everyone.

If you wish to meet, share, dance and self-explore through movement and creative process you are more than welcome, regardless of previous experience in dance.

Through an open call, Unplugged Dance selects artists, researchers and/or educators who come from the field of dance and have to share their own method or practice that approaches this art through the prism of integration/embodiment.

By inviting people from all over the world to teach it brings together people from different socio-cultural backgrounds, and with a common field of dance practice, it creates a place of meeting and reconciliation. An amalgamation of different people meeting and sharing about the body and movement.

Participants

This year, for the first year, we wish Unplugged Dance 2024 | From personal practice to the educational and creative method to offer scholarships to a group of graduates of professional dance schools from Greece who wish to come into contact with original methods and practices, to converse with recognized artists from the international field, and to acquire tools for how to develop and systematize their own creative and educational processes.

Artistic residency

For professional artists, researchers and/or educators seeking residency in an active community, Unplugged Dance offers a residency and research space where they can co-exist, receive and give feedback, and develop their creative ideas.

WHY ARE WE INTERESTED IN THIS DANCE APPROACH

The practices of embodiment (somatics) are nothing new. They are related to Yoga, Tai Chi and among others, many approaches to meditation. In 1976 Thomas Hanna first introduced the term Somatics to frame a field of practices that studied the body as we perceive it internally, and worked with consciousness and bodily awareness. Since then, these practices have increased in content and number. Under the term umbrella is included a set of experiential tools and practices, such as focusing attention (mindfulness, meditation), conscious movement and dance, tactile practices (hands-on bodywork: thai yoga massage, biodynamic craniosacral etc. ), breathing practices (breathwork, pranayamas), kinetic and theatrical improvisation practices. As well as more systematic practices and methods such as Klein Technique, Skinner releasing, Body-Mind Centering, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Franklin method, Contemplative Dance Practice, Rolfing, etc.

In dance, we find embodiment as a demand and as an approach more and more often, mainly in techniques and methods related to improvisation, which shift the focus from shape to the senses and from goal-setting to inner research.

In Unplugged Dance we choose to emphasize the importance of embodiment in dance education, research and choreography, in order to approach dance in a more open and inclusive way related to self-determination, empowerment and expression. Such an approach is more than a need to escape from instructions or an image-orientated approach. It is a way to sharpen the ability to listen to yourself through listening to your body. A dance -metaphorically and literally speaking- beyond the pursuit of a perfect form, that serves a liberating process of acceptance and joy.

Our intention is to meet and highlight dance methods or techniques that may exist around the world and approach dance as such an act.

Yorgos Sioras Deligiannis

co-founder, co-artistic director

Graduate of National School of Dance (2014), dancer, choreographer and curator in the field of dance research and education. He curated Platform for the performing arts Meta (2015-2019), meetings for artistic research and creation (2018-2019) and co-curated festival Lycabettus (2020-2021). For the past seven years collective initiatives have been a main source of interest, reflection and a place to be. His personal artistic research raises questions regarding identity and creates practices that provoke the relation between the public and the private space. Since 2018 he has showcased two series of works, The Selfy Series and Regulatory Bodies, both partly founded by the Greek Ministry of Arts. Since 2009 he has been a yoga instructor and currently he has been giving classes mainly outdoors throughout the year.

Kyveli Kouvatsi

co-founder, co-artistic director

Kyveli Kouvatsi (born in Lefkada, Greece 1996) is facilitating, researching and curating in the field of dance, based half year in Lefkada and half in Athens. She has graduated from National School of Dance (2021), and she is finishing her studies in School of Drama – Faculty of Fine Arts – Auth.

Her main interest revolves around educational processes and ways of holding the space for people to explore & flourish through the dance experience.

Since 2017 she has been teaching dance classes for children in dance schools and summer camps. Her lessons focus on the experience of dance, the development of children’s creativity within non-judgmental contexts, the cultivation of body awareness and the relationship with rhythm and the environment.

Since 2020 she has been researching, developing and sharing the practices Losing Ground (partnering) and Bloom Inside | sensorial explorations | reflective dances | creative practices (improvisation and mindful movement).

For the last two years, she has been working as an organization, communication and promotion manager in dance schools, artistic educational programs and productions in the field of dance.

She is the co-founder and co-curator of the international dance platform Unplugged Dance and of the venue Paleochori, in Neochori, Lefkada.

Danae Giannakakou

communications coordinator

Danae, born in Athens, Greece, embodies a vibrant and spirited essence, cherishing the beauty of human interactions and connections. Her love for creativity finds expression through various mediums including dance, photography, and drawing, among others, shaping her purpose within the realm of arts. From an early age, Danae’s inclination towards movement was evident, prompting her mother to enroll her in dance lessons. It was not love at first sight, but one that grew bigger and bigger through the years that came. In 2022 she graduated from the National School of Dance (KSOT) where she studied to be a professional dancer and teacher. Three months later she graduated from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), with a degree of business administration and marketing, for which she studied simultaneously. Multidimensionality, has been an element in Danae’s life throughout her whole life path, but just recently she started accepting it and trying to move with it and not against it. Following her graduation, Danae dedicated a year to teaching dance to children, an endeavor she holds dear for its impact on their future growth and development. Since October 2023 Danae has been working both in London and Greece, creating her own pieces and navigating life as a freelance artist. Her main focus at the moment, is leading a life with purpose, and happiness. Believing in the transformative power of movement and community, her practice is rooted in the belief that nature and compassionate connections possess the capacity to heal both mind and body. As she navigates her journey, Danae aspires to catalyze positive change within the artistic landscape, advocating for a more holistic and inclusive approach to the art of dance.

Maider Mulone Olmos

social media manager 2022/2023

After graduating from The Superior School of Dramatic Art and Dance from the Basque Country, Dantzerti, she completed a Master in Contemporary Technological and Performative Art offered by the Basque Public University (UPV). She defines herself as a “dancer in process” and lives dance as a tool for expression, research, inclusion and enjoyment.

She began her first steps in a small academy near her home, Elai, and from there she has gone through studios and companies such as Andoni Aresti Dantza Eskola, Dance Italia Dance Company and Mutis. Now, with no other goal than moving, listening and feeling she is in a state of searching and learning new artistic languages to convine with dance such as photography, video, installation and sound. With small projects behind her back she now looks forward to meet new people, experience move and of course enjoy the way of developing herself as an interpreter, creator and human.

Paleochori

Paleochori is an artistic venue hosting educational programs and retreats for dance and somatics.

It is located on the hills above the famous Nidri of Lefkada. Four and a half wooded hectares of land, on a side hill that enjoys a breathtaking view of Prigiponisia (a complex of seven islands, Meganisi, Skorpios, Skorpidi, Sparti, Madouri, Cheloni and Tsokari)

The remote site of Paleochori camp offers only sounds of nature while the surrounding mountains provide a uniform evening shadow.

Our primal need was to treat the surrounding space with care and respect for the environment and all the living beings of the land.

Neochori is a mountain village (300m) of Lefkada, about 5km from Nidri. Serenity and impressive view as well as absence of shops are distinguishing features of the village. Instead, there is plenty of green, four springs and a number of paths which are taken care of by the village community every year.

This village was once abandoned by the locals, when they gradually began to approach the coastal areas. Years later, around the late 70’s and early 80’s, it was rediscovered by people looking for a quiet place close to nature. Somehow it started to attract hippies, artists, people from different parts of the world and finally a community was created.

Today only a few of the families that first settled there remain in the village, but new ones have come, creating a mixture of people and cultures. In recent years, cultural association has been activated and the old school of the village has been renovated, where various activities take place, such as exhibitions, presentations, film screenings, festivals, seminars, etc. Especially in the summer months the village hosts a lot of people from different parts of the world.

Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian sea located on the West Coast of Greece, connected to the mainland with a bridge. It is famous worldwide for its stunningly beautiful beaches with transparent, turquoise waters, combined with the rich flora covering the mainland.

You can find below some useful information on how you can get to the island of Lefkada.

HOW TO GET TO NEOCHORI

1. The nearest airport to Lefkada is that of Preveza-Aktion (PVK), approximately 25 minutes away by car.

1A. As soon as you get to the airport, you can get a taxi all the way to Neochori village (taxi fare is about 70 euros). In this case we can help you by calling one on request at least 72 hours earlier.

1B. Another option is to take a taxi from the airport to Lefkada city (40 euros), and from there, take the bus from the Bus Terminal Ktel Lefkadas, and take the departure to Nidri. The ticket price is between 1,60 euros to 3,40 euros. Since you reach Nidri town, you can get a taxi from there to Neochori (15 euros). There is a taxi station near the bus station, or we can help you by calling one on request at least 72 hours earlier. In this case the whole distance will cost about 60 euros.

1C. You can take a bus from the airport to Lefkada city (3 euros), then take another departure to Nidri (1,60-3,40 euros) and from there a taxi to Neochori (15 euros). The total cost in this case is about 22 euros. There is a taxi station near the bus station, or we can help you by calling one on request at least 72 hours earlier. 2. In case you prefer to arrive at Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) you can take a bus from Athens Long Distance Bus Terminal ‘KTEL’. The distance is 340 km by bus, almost 5 hours including the 20′ break along the road. From the Airport take the city bus (X93) or a taxi to the Athens Long Distance Bus Terminal ‘KTEL’ (Address: Kifissou st. 100, Tel: +30 210 5124910-11 , website: https://ktel-lefkadas.gr/athens/ ) from where buses depart to Lefkada. The one way ticket price is 34 euros.

As soon as you arrive in Lefkada city, you can choose between taking a taxi all the way to Neochori (taxi fare is about 40 euros), or taking the bus to Nidri and from there taxi to Neochori (as mentioned above).

Other airports close to Lefkada are Zakynthos airport (ZTH) and Kefalonia airport (EFL). If these seem more convenient for your trip, please let us know so we can help you with more information.

FROM THE VILLAGE TO THE VENUE

As soon as our guests arrive in Neochori village a member of our team welcomes them! They wait in Foodpath, a beautiful yard of our partner where the kitchen is, have some lemonade while waiting for all the participants to arrive. Then our member guides them to the venue which is a 20′ walk. We can provide some help with luggages, however we definitely suggest you to avoid bringing a suitcase, but to prefer a backpack that you are able to carry instead! Remember, you are in nature, and most routes in the village are rocky!

You will be in the venue around 18.00-18.30 and then we have welcome dinner at 20.00.

In case you arrive at Lefkada earlier we suggest taking a bus/taxi to Nidri, spend some time there at the beach, buy anything you need cause there are no shops here in Neochori and then take another taxi in order to be here between 16.00-18.00.

*Please have in mind that due to high traffic in the Island it is also recommended to book your taxi rides at least two days before.

When you are aware of how you will travel and when exactly you will arrive, please let us know so we can get you in contact with other participants and we can help you with booking a taxi in advance from airport, Lefkada or Nidri, at least 72 hours earlier. Usually during a week or two before your arrival we create a whats app group so you can communicate regarding arriving to Neochori from Preveza or Lefkada.

**We can arrange one or two minibus lifts from Nidri to Neochori at specific times for an extra charge. If you are interested let us know till the end of June in order to book it for you.

DRIVING TO LEFKADA:

Lefkada may be an island but it is connected to the mainland by a 50 meters floating bridge. So it is easy to reach the island just by driving, through the Greek National Road 42 which is a highway in northwestern Aetolia-Acarnania that links the town of Lefkada with the Greek National Road 5 (Antirrio – Arta – Ioannina) in Amfilochia, passing through the town of Vonitsa.

The first town you reach by entering the island is Lefkada city, the capital and main town of the island of Lefkada, located in its northern and northeastern part.

From there, you can easily find the village which is located above Nidri (east side), after the village of Paleokatouna (Agios Christophoros in maps). The duration is approximately 25-30 minutes away from the town.

In case you use gps, we highly recommend to set Ag.Christophoros (Paleokatouna) as a destination ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/5GJqUoHPQhnT5c839 ), instead of Neochori, as Gps usually suggests a wrong way to Neochori!

If you arrive at Paleokatouna then you can very easily find Neochori just by continuing driving uphill. There is only one main road, and there are also signs.

FROM NEOCHORI TO NIDRI, LEFKADA AND THE REST OF THE ISLAND

Since Sundays in our programme will be free time, we provide you with some useful information in order to explore other places on the island. We can also help you by calling a taxi on request at least one day earlier.

Volunteering is a key practice in Unplugged that plays an important role in the proper regulation of the program and at the same time allowing us to offer a partial experience of the program for free. It is really important to us to offer these spots in order to give access to people who want to attend our program but they cannot afford it.

Full-time volunteering option

Every year we offer 2 positions for two volunteers who will attend all 4 weeks and will be in a position of program assistant and communication coordinator respectively, for 4 hours per day, with one day off upon agreement. We provide this individual with free access to the classes, as well as covering accommodation and meals.

The program assistant helps ensure the flow of the program as well as the accommodation on-site, being responsible for tasks, daily schedule, and other volunteers. The communication coordinator is the person responsible for promoting the program through social media, the website, and emails. Both are integral members of our team, and we seek individuals interested in the project and closely aligned with the philosophy of our program. Priority is usually given to individuals who have attended a previous version of the program.

Part-time volunteering option

We also offer 8 spots for part-time volunteering, 4 per period, for people who are interested in attending two weeks of the program but cannot afford it, in exchange for the tuition fees. This option involves 2 hours of work per day, allowing volunteers to participate regularly in the full day of workshops. Their tasks are simple and mostly involve keeping the space tidy and clean, transferring meals, and helping with serving and cleaning the buffet, etc. All tasks will be shared with other volunteers, and usually, a volunteer has no more than two chores to do every day.

In this way, they do not pay any tuition fees. There is still an amount for your accommodation and meals that has to be covered on your side. This depends on the type of accommodation that you will choose.

The possible dates to join us for 2024 are either from August 3rd to 19th or from August 17th to September 2nd.

The opening week of this summer program is an exhilarating blend of dynamic dance improvisation, focusing on physical movement, and laughter as a forceful and intimate exploration into the art of letting go. If you’re seeking ways to creatively channel your energy, daringly challenge your movement patterns as an empowering practice, and wish to encounter yourself through the unexpected realms of laughter, this week is tailor-made for you!

2nd Week | August 11 – 18, 2024 | The Body The Player The Journey with Rafaela Sahyoun | espaciopropio.augenblick with Fernando Nicolás Pelliccioli & Carlos Osatinsky

The second week is dedicated to playfulness, interconnected movement, and anatomical integration. These two workshops invite us to consider ourselves as part of a broader ecosystem, where we are interdependent with other humans and species. The last week of Unplugged Dance is dedicated to slowness. From offering more agency to our nervous system, to sensing Otherness through a tangible approach. Learning from and for the world of fluids, nurturing ecological ways of being in relation and practicing co-movement while listening with your skin what exists beyond it. If you are seeking a gentle, systematic, and informative approach that bridges self-research with partnering work, you shouldn’t miss this week.

This call is addressed to dance artists and educators, interested in sharing their personal research, on dance as a practice of embodiment.

These first two years have been a mine of information for all of us involved in the project.

This year, with an intention to deepen more in our quest of how we experience dance as a body and mind practice, we make our annual open call for new collaborators.

We are looking for educators and artists whose practices are orienting towards one or more of the following qualities, through different paths related to dance.

Candidates must present a method or technique that arises from their personal research and experience in order to facilitate an open level workshop for mixed group (professionals and non-professionals).

Candidates must have already presented the same or one similar workshop during the last two years.

In Unplugged Dance we choose to emphasize on the importance of embodiment in dance education, research and choreography, in order to approach dance in a more open and inclusive way that can relate to self-determination, empowerment and expression. Candidates must have an original practice/method/technique of their own to share in the form of an open level workshop for professionals and non-professionals. This year, with an intention to deepen more in our quest of how we can experience dance while enriching it with the qualities of somatic practices, we are broadening the spectrum by looking not only for educators but also for choreographers, dance artists and healers. Our interest lies in approaching qualities such as exploration of the soma (body) as perceived from within, observation, care, acceptance, self-reflection, non-goal orientation, non-hurry and non-interventionism, through different paths related to dance. Candidates, depending on their subject of interest, may focus more on one of the following:

Unplugged Dance is a summer dance program that gives participants the chance to experience original workshops at first hand from inspiring educators and artists in the fields of contemporary dance and somatic practices from all over the world.

It is a full-package experience including dance workshops, accommodation and meals for one, two or three weeks, depending on your choice.

Unplugged dance is having its first open call, and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

Unplugged Dance is a newborn dance platform focusing on research and education, based in the village of Neochori, Lefkada. This artist lead initiative was inspired by Kyveli Kouvatsi and Giorgos Sioras Deligiannis with the aim of exploring the present independent dance scene, its ways and methods, its interests and togethernesses. Their own quest in research and education made even more important and vivid the need to connect with similar individuals that pursue a way of doing what they do with care and with the intention of sharing and communicating it. The arterial idea of Unplugged Dance has sprung from a yearning to connect dance as a practice of embodiment and other relative practices with a vivid community, in a sustainable and decentralized way that preserves the independent nature of the enterprise.

The upcoming summer Unplugged Dance will host three weeks of workshops and classes among other activities in the serene village of Neochori in Lefkada, Greece. During a full week of workshops the participants will have the chance to deepen their knowledge in contemporary practices that subjectify the corporal experience and yet are specific in method.

This first open call is seeking original workshops that emerge from personal research and are linked with practices of embodiment. Candidates must have a research of their own to share, one that leads to a specific method, methodology or simply a way of doing what they do. No special degrees are required nor years of experience, yet they will be asked to share relative material online in any way they prefer and share it through a google drive folder. If the proposed workshop has never been presented before, a more analytical presentation would be appreciated.

Conditions:
Leading a workshop in english in two seperate groups for six days (a total of 24 hours)

We provide:
Payment of 960 euro for the teacher (cost for invoice payment only)

The overall experience was perfect, meals were good, I had never eaten a lot of these meals and I felt really good. I loved both places, I felt safe on the camp, started to feel like at home after some days, foodcamp was inspiring, as there were a lot of different people coming and going, sometimes it felt like I was in a movie. Loved the walks up and down, especially in early mornings and late evenings, it just had this unbelievable feeling. The island was beautiful, the beaches I saw, also the citys, people were so inviting and helpful, that it was hard not to enjoy any conversation or situation I was in. Thank you for creating such a wonderful space for like-minded people to meet, dance, and live together over a period of an intense three-week movement program. I am glad I came for the full three-week duration because I could really immerse myself into the community, which was transforming itself from the start to finish. I loved all the workshops we did and the teachers who facilitated with such quality, working with partners, the scenic setting, the local community… It felt amazing to be part of this program and back it with my presence, seeing how much of a genuine drive it required to set it up, along with the infrastructure, organisation, curation, and management, gathering support for its realisation, etc. What an achievement! I met interesting, creative, and artistic people all over the world, who like me seek out alternative ways of being, love dance, and not leaving out yoga. As a company we have terms and conditions which are mapped with specific rules and regulations for all our programs. We kindly ask you to read and accept the below, as this will facilitate the smooth running of your selected program.

• Participants should be over 18 years old.

• Participants who have any kind of injury or health problem, mental or physical, or taking medication for any reason, are requested to submit the required information in a form that Unplugged Dance will send via email after the completion of booking. The facilitators of the course will be informed of participants’ health history in order to give them the care and the treatment which is the best for them.

• The use of illegal substances is prohibited during the Unplugged Dance program.

• The consumption of alcohol in the venue is not allowed without the permission of the supervisors.

• Smoking cigarettes in the venue is not allowed, except for the smoking area.

• Lighting fires in the venue is not allowed without the permission of the supervisors.

• All facilitators of Unplugged Dance educational program are experienced professionals yet every participant is responsible for their own physical integrity and health during the program. In case of injury or accident during the courses or their staying in the venue where the program is held, the Company bears no responsibility.

• Even though we never had to deal with stealing incidents until now, and there is no criminality in the village, every participant is responsible for their personal items during their stay in the venue. In case of loss the company bears no responsibility.

• All participants must conform to program rules as well as accommodation/staying rules. Any misbehavior with other participants or facilitators, such as verbal or physical violence, disruptive behavior or harassment, will be strictly considered a breach of the Unplugged Dance program’s code of conduct and the Tripodium Company has the right to require you to leave the private area of the venue.

• Every participant is requested to fulfill the registration formalities and submit the required information before the start of the course.

• In case of cancellation on your side, the deposit is non-refundable, with the only exception being circumstances such as closed borders, pandemic, or war preventing your travel. If the event is canceled for any reason, the entire deposit amount will be refunded without reservations.

• Every participant is requested to pay off the remaining balance in Euros via bank transfer, or credit/debit card, until the day of their arrival. At any time before the program’s start date, if you have already paid the remaining balance and choose to cancel, a full refund only of the remaining balance will be provided. In this case, any transaction or bank fees will be charged on the receiver.

• In case a participant leaves the program at any time and for any reason the company has no obligation to refund the amount he/she has paid.
